Hail damage is not what most people picture
The mental image is holes. Actual hail damage to an asphalt roof is a bruise: a soft, slightly depressed circular area where the impact fractured the fibreglass mat beneath the surface and knocked the protective granules loose. Press it and it gives, like a bruise on fruit. From the ground it is completely invisible. From ten feet away on the roof it is easy to miss.
It also does not leak on the day it happens, which is the part that costs people money. The mat is fractured but the shingle is still shedding water. What follows is UV exposure on asphalt that no longer has granules protecting it, then accelerated deterioration at every bruise, and a roof that starts leaking eighteen months to three years later — by which time the claim window has usually closed and the damage reads as ordinary wear.
Assessment is therefore about density and pattern rather than dramatic damage. We mark test squares of defined size on each slope, count the strikes within them, and record orientation, because hail arrives on a bearing and a genuine event leaves more damage on the exposed slopes than on the sheltered ones. Soft metals on the property — gutters, downspouts, vent caps, flashing, air conditioner fins, mailboxes — corroborate it, since they dent visibly at impact energies that only bruise a shingle.
Wind damage and what it leaves behind
Wind does not usually strip a roof. It breaks the adhesive bond. Asphalt shingles seal to the course below via a heat-activated strip, and once wind gets under an edge and breaks that seal, the shingle is loose whether or not it looks it.
The signature to look for is a horizontal crease. A shingle lifted and folded back by a gust, then laid flat again as the wind drops, has a fractured mat along the fold line. It sits perfectly flat and looks entirely normal from the ground, and it will open at that line in the next storm. Unsealed shingles that never creased are equally consequential and even harder to see — they simply lift again the next time.
Wind damage also concentrates at edges and corners, where uplift pressures are highest: rakes, eaves, ridges and hips, and the corners of the roof plane. A roof with an intact field and disturbance around every perimeter is a classic wind pattern.

How the claim actually works
There is a great deal of misleading material about storm claims, most of it produced by people who benefit from a claim being filed. Here is the process without the varnish.
- Find out whether you have damage. A documented inspection first. Filing a claim that is then denied still appears on your claims history, so establishing whether there is a case is genuinely worth doing before you call the insurer.
- Report it within your policy’s window. Policies contain deadlines for reporting storm damage, and they vary considerably. Late reporting is a common and entirely avoidable reason for denial.
- The adjuster inspects. They assess damage, attribute it to the event or to wear, and prepare a scope. You or your contractor may attend, and attending is worth doing — a finding overlooked in the field is harder to add later.
- You receive a scope and a settlement figure. Read the scope line by line against the inspection findings. Omissions are usually unintentional, and supplements exist for exactly this reason.
- Understand actual cash value versus replacement cost. Most policies pay actual cash value first, with the depreciation released once the work is completed and invoiced. That is not the insurer keeping money; it is a mechanism to ensure the work actually happens.
- Your deductible is yours. Any contractor offering to waive it, absorb it, or make it disappear inside an inflated invoice is proposing insurance fraud, and in most states it is a criminal offence exposing you as well as them.
Timing, and the trucks that show up
After a significant hail or wind event, out-of-area crews arrive and canvass door to door. Some are competent. The pattern worth recognising is the same every time: manufactured urgency, free-roof language, a request to sign something described as authorisation to inspect that turns out to be a contingency contract binding you to them if a claim is approved, and an offer to handle your deductible.
The protection is procedural rather than intuitive. Do not sign anything on the doorstep. Verify licensing and insurance in the state where your property is, not where the truck is registered. Ask for a physical business address and a written scope. And note that a legitimate contractor will be entirely comfortable with you taking a day to consider it — the roof has been damaged since the storm and will still be damaged tomorrow.
Immediately after a storm: photograph everything from the ground before anyone touches anything, including dented gutters, downspouts, screens, vent caps and any hail still on the ground next to something for scale.
